Deck Stain Coverage Formulas & Substrate Takeoff

Total stainable square footage combines horizontal floor decking, vertical fascia boards, multi-sided railing balusters, and stair treads:

Deck Staining Formulas:
Floor Area = Length × Width
Railing Surface Area = Railing Length × Railing Height × 1.5 (accounts for 4-sided balusters)
Stair Area = Number of Steps × 12 sq ft (treads, risers, stringers)
Total Stainable Area = (Floor + Railings + Stairs) × 1.10 (waste allowance)
Gallons Needed = (Total Stainable Area ÷ Spread Rate) × Number of Coats

Worked Example: 12 × 16 ft Backyard Deck with Railings & 4 Steps

For a standard 12 × 16 ft pressure-treated deck with 28 linear feet of perimeter railing and 4 steps:

Frequently Asked Questions

How many square feet does 1 gallon of deck stain cover?

On smooth, milled cedar, redwood, or pre-planed pine, one gallon of deck stain covers 250 to 300 square feet per coat. On weathered, rough-sawn, or porous pressure-treated decking, coverage drops to 150 to 200 square feet per gallon.

How do I calculate stain for deck railings and balusters?

Multiply total perimeter railing length by height, then multiply by 1.5 to account for top rails, bottom rails, posts, and all four exposed faces of standard spindles and balusters.

Do I need 1 or 2 coats of stain on an exterior wood deck?

Most semi-transparent and penetrating oil stains require 2 thin wet-on-wet coats applied within 30 minutes to saturate wood fibers without forming a peeling surface film. Solid color stains generally require 2 distinct dry coats.

How long should new pressure-treated wood dry before staining?

New pressure-treated wood contains high moisture from preservative chemical injection and typically requires 3 to 6 months of outdoor drying. Perform the sprinkle test: sprinkle water droplets on the boards—if absorbed quickly, the wood is ready to stain.
