Gravel Volume to Weight (Tons) Conversion Formulas

Aggregate material suppliers sell gravel and crushed rock by the ton weighed on truck scales, while excavations are measured in cubic yards or cubic meters:

Gravel & Stone Weight Formulas:
Base Volume (cu ft) = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × (Depth in inches ÷ 12)
Compacted Volume (cu ft) = Base Volume × (1 + Compaction% / 100)
Cubic Yards = Compacted Volume ÷ 27
Weight in US Short Tons = Cubic Yards × Material Density (default 1.40 tons/yd³)
50 lb Bags Equivalent = ⌈(Weight in Tons × 2,000 lbs) ÷ 50 lbs⌉

Worked Example: 12 × 20 ft Driveway at 4 Inches Depth

For a standard single-car driveway parking pad (12 × 20 ft) with 4 inches of crushed stone base:

Frequently Asked Questions

How many tons of gravel are in a cubic yard?

One cubic yard of standard crushed stone (#57 stone or 3/4-inch gravel) weighs approximately 1.40 US short tons (2,800 lbs). Pea gravel weighs approximately 1.35 tons per cubic yard (2,700 lbs), while dense-graded crusher run / limestone road base with fines weighs 1.45 tons per cubic yard (2,900 lbs).

How deep should gravel be for a patio, walkway, or driveway?

For garden paths and pedestrian walkways, a 2 to 3 inch depth is sufficient. For paver patios and concrete slab sub-bases, install 4 inches of compacted aggregate. For residential vehicle driveways, install a 6 to 8 inch compacted base in two separate lifts.

How many 50 lb bags of gravel make one ton?

There are exactly 40 fifty-pound (50 lb) bags in one US short ton (2,000 lbs). Because one cubic yard of gravel weighs approximately 1.4 tons, one cubic yard requires approximately 56 fifty-pound bags.

What is the difference between clean crushed stone and crusher run?

Clean crushed stone (#57) consists of uniform gravel washed free of stone dust, creating voids that provide excellent water drainage for French drains and retaining walls. Crusher run (dense grade aggregate) blends angular crushed stone with fine stone dust that packs tightly when rolled or vibrated to create a rigid, load-bearing driveway foundation.
