COATPATH / PLANNING GUIDE

How much primer do I need?

Calculate primer independently from finish paint and account for spot priming.

Primer quantity = area being primed × primer coats ÷ primer coverage. Apply any chosen extra allowance after that calculation. Primer and finish paint may have different coverage, so do not reuse one figure automatically.

Whole surface or repaired patches?

For full-surface priming, use the same measured net area as the finish coat. For spot priming, make a separate custom-area project using only the patches that need primer. The main planner applies primer to every included surface, so it should not be used unchanged for partial priming.

Worked example

A 307 sq ft wall area with one coat at 250 sq ft/gal needs 1.228 gallons before extra. With 10% extra it needs 1.3508 gallons. With one-gallon containers available, buy two gallons.

Choose the product before the quantity

Primer compatibility depends on the substrate and finish system. Check instructions for adhesion, stain blocking and bare surfaces. The estimator determines quantity, not whether a particular primer is suitable.

Different primers

The project pools primer as one product. If you need different primers for different surfaces, estimate them in separate projects and round each purchase separately.

Full priming versus spot priming

Illustrative coverage of 8 m²/L, one coat and 10% extra
ScopeCalculationNeeded
32 m² of walls32 ÷ 8 × 1.14.4 L
4 m² of patches4 ÷ 8 × 1.10.55 L

If only 2.5 L tins exist, those become 5 L and 2.5 L purchases. If a compatible 1 L tin is available, the patches need only one tin. Enable actual primer sizes before relying on a shopping total. The current project uses one available-size catalog for paint and primer, so use a separate project if their sold sizes differ.

Open the planner, select Custom area for patches, and check the primer line independently from finish paint. Do not order the finish-paint estimate from a patch-only primer project as your whole-room paint order.
